History: Srilankan Airlines

In the year 1979, Air Lanka was established by the Government of Sri Lanka after the closure of earlier existing national carrier Air Ceylon in 1978. SriLankan Airlines signed an agreement with Emirates Airlines in 1998, and got its current name in the same year. The agreement made SriLankan Airlines a partly-privatized entity and all rights to aircraft ground handling, airline catering, and investment & management decisions were handed over to Emirates Airlines. However, the partnership with Emirates expired in March, 2008 and not renewed by SriLankan Airlines.
